Nit Wits #28: Pumpkin Patch

Nit Wits #28: Pumpkin Patch by Chris Dunmire

Nit Wits #28: Pumpkin Patch Posted Oct-16-2006
Gourdly-Growing & Repair

FREE BONUS FUN: Print the FREE Pumpkin Patch!

I've got it bad this year. Pumpkinitis. It's a condition where the mind is obsessively obsessed with pumpkins and gourds. I think I picked it up when I bought a bag of those teeny table-top gourds from Sams Club. This was the first time in my life that I've brought those into my home. There were at least a dozen in the bag and they ended up spread all over my kitchen, dining- and living-rooms. White ones, orange ones, green and brownly-orange striped ones.

Every pumpkin nationality was represented in that white mesh Sams bag. I gave many of them away to friends as they walked out my front door. "What's this?" they'd ask. "A gourdly gift," I'd respond. But some still lurk. I'm waiting for them to give me a sign that they're going bad. Do gourds grow mold? Or do they just grow fonder?

And then there was the full-size pumpkin I bought for a fall-themed party last month. It's been sitting on my front porch for several weeks and I'm wondering if it will make it until "that big day" (Halloween). We didn't have pumpkins in my house when I was growing up. It was a gourd-free zone. I think I'm making up for lost time.

This is where the Nit Wits Pumpkin Patch comes in. One would think those "Mirecle Labs" patch people made it just for this condition, this Pumpkinitis I have, despite its play on words depicting what else — a Pumpkin Patch! Linus would be absolutely thrilled at the Great Pumpkin potential (poor kid). Or maybe, it's for the pumpkin itself when people mishap in carving those toothy Jack-O-Lantern grins. In every pumpkin carving 101 repair kit there should exist a pumpkin patch or three.

I promise that this Pumpkinitis won't deter my creativity. I will blame it for my obsession with pumpkins in many Creative Slush entries this month, however. I will make it through this orangey month of October... but not without showing you more pumpkins. I've come across many on my fabulous fall journey. I can't imagine life without them.
