The Unruly Artist

By Chris Dunmire

Here's how the out-of-this-world interview with Angela Cartwright happened: In January, while watching a rerun of the 1998 TV biography/where are they now? program "Lost in Space Forever", I learned that child-star Angela Cartwright (who played Penny Robinson on the show), had grown up to become a prolific artist and author with her hands in many creative things outside of acting: photography, altered art, stamp making, and writing books.

Intrigued, I wiki'd Angela and found out lots of other interesting tidbits about her: where she was born, what films and TV shows she's acted in, and where I could see her work online. Mind you, Lost in Space came and went before I landed on this planet and I wasn't part of the Disney generation that sang and danced to The Sound of Music.

So I passed through Angela's showbiz site on over to her studio Web site, and then to her blog Said & Done — In the Shadows of An Unruly Artist, and immediately recognized it as a creative journey blog, which always excites me.

After taking in a few work-in-progress posts, I knew Angela for certain would make a great interview for Creativity Portal's Creative Careers in the Arts series, so I inquired if she might be interested. And the rest is history.

Of course I'm star-struck. Angela was in outer space after all, Lost, perhaps, but in celestial company. Besides, after our interview was published she wrote on her blog that Creativity Portal "is a cool site." What an awesome affirmation. I'm kinda feeling like Marcia Brady did after Davy Jones showed up at her house to give her his new record after she lost her diary. It's just a thrill for us TV-watching folk to connect with TV-acting celebs, right? Plus, it's my first time. So, yay, Internet, and THANK YOU, Angela!

Next on my wish list... Cindy Brady (Susan Olsen). She grew up and dabbled in graphic design, you know. •
