Digging the Drumming on Recyclables
By Chris Dunmire
By happenstance (channel surfing), I got a glimpse of the band Recycled Percussion (recycledpercussionband.com) as finalists on NBC's America's Got Talent the other night and loved their "junk rock" sound and performance art creativity. As a designer, I also dig their logo (above) with the drum sticks posing as the "y" in recycled.
I've always been a drum and percussion aficionado, so when I saw pieces of their back story I decided to pause the channel on the remote and watch their performance. It turned out to be a great inspirational investment for me; they put a lot of hard work and energy into their set and it was so rewarding watching them perform a creative cover of the song "Wipeout", complete with getting totally soaked by streams and buckets of water.
If you're interested, you can listen to a few of their "Rock / Drum & Bass / Powerpop" songs on their MySpace page (full-length streams, which I'm listening to as I blog, including a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer."). Band members Justin Spencer, Jim Magoon, Ryan Vezina, and DJ Pharaoh are from New Hampshire, and their AGT bio states:
Ryan and Justin are not only cousins but also the drummers; James joins them on guitar and DJ Todd rounds out the group that is rightfully called Recycled Percussion. For the past 10 years they have been creating their unique style of music with just about anything they can get their hands on -- everyday household objects like ladders, buckets, trashcans and even metal grinders!
Don't be mislead by their hard-edge industrial sound. These guys not only inspire awesome powers of co-creative collaborative excellence, but are also "determined to inspire a drug-free youth to tune in and watch the amazing things you can do when you put your mind to it."
I can't help but have high respect for these entertainers and show support for how far they've come, I can see them winning this thing and becoming a Vegas act.
Today when I checked Amazon I saw Recycled Percussion has one MP3 song download available for 99 cents: Man Vs. Machine. I hope they make the others available there too, soon. •
