Imagination & Play: Not
Just for Kids
Last month I entered Michael Bungay Stanier's contest for the best photograph
of his Get Unstuck & Get
Going coaching tool in 'a cool and funky' location. His challenge inspired
me for the sheer fun of it, and I didn't have to travel far to snap an exotic
scene.
The creativity enthusiast in me simply called upon her active
imagination and invented her own scenario. See, all of that
role playing I did (and the imaginary friends I had) as a child
just prepared me for opportunities like this. I can still reach
down and pull it out when I have to.
And guess what? I won the contest and
this month's prize which is a brand spanking-new Porsche 911!
Okay,
not
really (imagination talking there). But the
prize I did receive was well worth the creative energy I put
forth — not to mention the playful fun I had.
Want to see what I submitted to the contest? Here's the photo
I captured, as well my note to Michael:

Hello Michael,
I found your invitation for submitting a photo of a noteworthy
subject holding a copy of your "Get Unstuck & Get
Going" quite coincidental!
It just so happens that I was visiting Chicago's Millennial
park this week and ran into a couple of characters who are
very fond of your work. In fact, the taller one told me "In
my line of work, there's always the tendency of getting stuck
... usually due to the nature of our material."
He just happened to have a copy of your book with him,
so I asked if they wouldn't mind me taking a snapshot to submit
to your
contest. "Not at all," he exclaimed. "And please
tell Michael his book is a worthwhile tool to help "re-mold" minds!"
So there you have it, Michael. Unbelievable, eh? (© 2005
