Cathy Salser's Window Between Worlds July-31-2009
Art as a Healing Tool
I'm encouraged after reading the interview with Cathy Salser, founder of A Window Between Worlds (www.awbw.org) "dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence," with the belief that "through creative expression, battered women and children recover a sense of renewal and power." Creative expression through fluid mediums like art and writing are so powerful and lend urgent healing modes to so many people. Great work, AWBW! •

Mathematician Magician
We've all done it: subtracted them, divided them, rounded them, and split them into fractions and percentages, but did you ever stop to wonder where all those discarded numbers go when we're through with them? ...

The Perk of 'Buying it Forward' July-21-2009
Random Acts of Kindness at the Coffee Shop
Here's an inspiring ABC news video talking about customers paying it forward in line for the next customer at the Steam & Bean, a Kansas City coffee shop. This chain reaction of kindness (even though everyone still spends money) also ripples a creative effect of generosity and good will in the world.
I've always believed in such small, powerful acts of kindness, and if you're inspired to hook into the wave and need some meditative, sink-in tools, feel free to use some of the free Kindness Pass-Along printables at Creativity Portal. •

"1 Brick from the Ton that Hit Me"
Here's a new Be Creative! Adults writing exercise I created complete with a printable form as inspired by a recent adventure I had crafting a memorable message to be engraved on a brick for Womanspace's Celebration Garden. Give it a try and see what surprising creative results come from working within limitations. •

Amy Lloyd's Refrigerator Project: Call for Submissions
Reposted July-11-2009
Refrigerator Photo Book to Feed the Hungry
I received this e-mail from actress Amy Lloyd with the request to spread the word about her philanthropic project:
"I am creating a coffee table photo book
of what is on people's refrigerators. The fridge is universally
utilitarian, yet everyone adorns it differently and I think it
is this unique piece of home art.
Anyway, I need donated digital photos of peep's fridges, so I
can fashion this book AND all proceeds from the sale of these
books will go to feeding the hungry. Maybe I can't feed all of
Africa, but this is my small artistic project that will feed someone
in need.
I hope you will help.
Many thanks.
All photos can be sent to me."

"Thinkertoys" Author Michael Michalko Interview
July-2-2009
"Use what talents you have."
I am so inspired today after reading Molly Anderson-Childers' interview with creativity expert and author Michael Michalko (www.creativethinking.net). Michalko has an impressive work resume, having worked with NATO and CIA think tanks, fortune 500 companies, and authoring several books on creativity, but it's page 4 of the interview that really gets to my heart.
Molly asks, "What inspires you?" To which Michael responds with a story about his Godfather John Haffich and a poem he wrote for Michael that he's carried around in his wallet ever since. I'll let you read the details in the interview, but it truly impresses the important lesson about not letting fears of inadequacies about our creative skills and talents to render us silent. Listen to the birds. •
