Writing Prompt: What are "Answers"?
Bonus: What is true?

Recently I picked up a children’s book at the library by Dr. Stephen Law titled “Really, Really Big Questions about Life, the Universe, and Everything.” Although geared towards a younger audience with plenty of color and illustrations, the book probed into areas about the universe, ethics, and perception with questions about the meaning of life, why it’s important to know stuff, and how important happiness is.

I zoomed through the 60-odd pages in about an hour, soaking in the author’s surface breaking tips-of-the-iceberg on age-old debates from evolution, intelligent design, psychic powers,  and astrology; to time travel, aliens, knowledge and truth. I must admit: The book was true to its title about Really Big Questions, but in the end like so many philosophical books, it contained no concrete answers. Many books are written towards exercising your mind, and this one was no exception on “investigating big ideas on the roller-coaster ride of reason and ridiculousness that is philosophy.”

It’s funny — I have been on this roller coaster ride since my mid-20s seeking Big Answers about Life, the Universe, and Everything and some days come really close to accepting the mystery of not-knowing, just to temporarily settle my mind and heart through respite, while still honoring faith and belief as another thing entirely.

What are some of your Really Big Questions? •
